Walt Whitman: Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. He is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse.

When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d: When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d is a long poem in the form of an elegy written by American poet Walt Whitman in 1865. It is a 206-line poem written in free verse and employing many of the devices and conceits of the pastoral elegy. This poem was written in the Summer of 1864 during a period a period of profound national mourning in the aftermath of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln on 14 April 1865.
